We have taken all this COVID-19 stuff pretty seriously and pretty much stayed home. I know there are lots of folks out there that don’t seem to think it is as bad as it is out there but, either way, we are staying in as much as possible. We have been working from home (we own / lead a real estate team called the Duncan Group with Engel & Volkers in Edmond) but that has been mostly content writing, doing live streams, and helping clients we have already been working with. So, it has left us with a bit more time on our hands than we are used to having.
So, what to do with that time?
I have jumped in to writing again but something else has also been happening that I wasn’t really expecting: an increased thirst to know more. I have taken several online real estate “webinars” that I have found (all the free ones of course) and started a couple of designations with the National Association of Realtors and I have really enjoyed gaining more knowledge each day.
But here is the crazy one. I have had this itch for the past couple of weeks to go back to school. Then, out of the blue, I heard about a degree that Western Colorado (or, Western State for those that have grown up in and out of the Gunnison / Crested Butte valley) is offering online. I can’t stop thinking about it! Western has been a school I have thought about often and I pretty much thought I’d end up there for my undergrad work before I landed at Belmont. Maybe now is my chance. Crazy.
Outdoor Industry MBA
Yup. That’s right. A Master’s degree in the outdoor industry – an industry I have been trying to break into for months now. An industry that I care about deeply and that I have missed since my days at the Nashville Sun & Ski Sports (a job I held for about 4 years and loved it) where I worked in the ski and bike shop, sold ski and bikes and related gear, and taught ski lessons on the indoor ski deck (crazy cool).
Here is what they say about the degree:
Are you interested in moving up the professional ladder and bringing your lifestyle with you? Western’s Outdoor Industry MBA allows working professionals to obtain a non-generic, advanced degree from anywhere in the world while creating meaningful impact. Evening online courses, immersion experiences and a final capstone project with an organization of their choosing, brings professionals the content and connections of a degree geared specifically to advance their careers, enter into the industry or create a new business.

Yes to ALL OF THOSE THINGS! I have started looking through the course work and all of the classes seem to hit right at home for me. It is strange what happens when you slow down enough to give yourself a second to breathe and to think about what the future might hold.
I have never thought about or had a desire to go back to school. It just wasn’t on my radar but now seems like the perfect time. This program is a 2 semester, 36 hour work load and it seems that it can mostly be done online. (I am waiting for more information on that to see just how it all works.)
Anyone Done It?
Applications are due on June 1st and deposits are due July 15th so I have………..this much time to get my act together and learn about financial aid options and how I could pay for such a learning opportunity. That is, to say, I even get accepted into the program.
Oh! And I saw that all graduate application fees are WAIVED for the remainder of the 2020-21 admissions period. That’s pretty good news (although I have no clue what those fees would have been or what that would save me if I decide to go for this thing), too.
Has there been strange side effects for you during all of this “home” time? For me, it has been learning, eating well, little spurts of a home workout routine throughout the day, and lots and lots of walks. I mean a lot. OH, and this going back to school thing.
Which brings me to this widely known and overly published quote:
“If you’re going through hell, keep going.”Winston Churchill
I think we are all going through a bit of hell right now. Keep going. Get stronger. Do better. Chase crazy ideas. Get through it!
