Keeping it Local in Oklahoma.

I think it was 2008.. maybe 2009? It was a time in Oklahoma City that mimicked spring. You could feel that something was ahead.. that good things were coming.. growth was inevitable.. We were operating EVOKE in the Plaza District – in a studio we shared with great friends Lindsey Gibson and Josh McCullock we called 1708. It was early and the survival tactic at the time for small businesses like ours was to collaborate and work together to help spread the word on what was good and what was coming. Keep it Local OK Cafe Evoke Feature My good…

Finding purpose: A look at industry and identity.

“We see who you are, and care about how you are. We embrace and embody your hopes, dreams and commitments. We will hold you in high regard and desire deeply that you live and grow to your heart’s content. In short, we are with you.” -City Home Collective Can I talk a bit openly about real estate for a few minutes (and no, this isn’t me trying to Realtor you to death or sell you a house or get you on a mailing list.. I promise)? Probably too openly but, for the good or bad / right or wrong, that…

You are only as effective as your team is strong.

I was thinking today about teams and the ability of the team leader to be effective. I batted this idea around since I woke up and basically came up with this: You (as a leader) are only as effective as your TEAM is strong. Now, hear me out. I am not saying that a person that through promotion, design, hire, or natural placement has to have a strong team already in place to be an effective leader. What I’m saying is that as a team leader evolves in that role that their overall effectiveness will eventually be measured not by…

The one powerful thing I’ve been doing all wrong…

I was sitting down at my desk trying to figure out what I should work on next. Refreshing my five email accounts every 30 seconds waiting for that next message I was sure was going to pop up. The one that was going to change everything. It was during one of those times when I then went to refresh my Instagram feed and a quote from one of the folks I read often (Jesse Itzler) popped up and smacked me in the face…. “People are always waiting for something to happen before they change their lives. But they have it…

Own it. Then get to work changing it.

Here is some truth for you. I’m crazy passionate about certain things. I speak what is on my mind. I talk too much. I have strong opinions. I like to have a path forward and to the top. I’m owning it. Now it is time to start making some changes. No, I do not want to change who I am but I DO think it is time to change how I operate. To be better at being a part of the team. To be more supportive. Happier. To receive a dose of what I preach and starting taking a bit…

This is a long story.. I’ll keep it brief.

I would say one of THE MOST asked questions when I sit down to talk coffee, business, etc… with other is this: How did you get into coffee? The answer? I have no clue. No, really. I think I have written before that I really backed into coffee more than blazed some known path from college to coffee shop. I was a music guy (well, more like someone that liked to host, plan, promote and manage music) and this was the day of the “Daily Buzz, Java, Grind” sort of shops. You know.. the ones with the little stage for…

You are 9. Happy Birthday

The first weekend in May will always be special. Not only does my dad turn a year older, it also is the weekend we opened EVOKE. May 1st, 2012. That was the day that felt like the beginning and the end and the in between all at the same time. That’s strange, I know. But it is true. May 1st, 2012 ended the long planning process (you know, that 10 or so years of dreaming I’ve talked about before). It started the next phase of my coffee life and a time for which I had no idea what was coming.…

The Exchange – An Oklahoma City Entrepreneurship Club

Tomorrow, March 29th, I have the honor of joining a great group of entrepreneurs to talk some real talk. I will be jumping on to talk with the members of The Exchange to talk about life, business, and to tell a bit of how my story has played out so far. The Exchange is creating a community for entrepreneurs who want a new way to network. I think this is going to be good! As I say often when talking to folks about my story – I’m an open book and all I ask in return is that when we…

I don’t want to hear it (and you shouldn’t either).

I hear it a lot. I hear it at City meetings. When talking about opening new businesses. On bicycles and skis. At the dinner table with my kids. I hear it everywhere and I decided something. I hear it because we aren’t willing to put in the effort to make it possible. It got me thinking to a time when I was sitting in a meeting with many of the City’s leadership staff. I remember telling one of them to stop telling me that what I thought was best was impossible but, rather, use that energy to tell me all…
