You are 9. Happy Birthday

The first weekend in May will always be special. Not only does my dad turn a year older, it also is the weekend we opened EVOKE. May 1st, 2012. That was the day that felt like the beginning and the end and the in between all at the same time. That’s strange, I know. But it is true. May 1st, 2012 ended the long planning process (you know, that 10 or so years of dreaming I’ve talked about before). It started the next phase of my coffee life and a time for which I had no idea what was coming.…

The Exchange – An Oklahoma City Entrepreneurship Club

Tomorrow, March 29th, I have the honor of joining a great group of entrepreneurs to talk some real talk. I will be jumping on to talk with the members of The Exchange to talk about life, business, and to tell a bit of how my story has played out so far. The Exchange is creating a community for entrepreneurs who want a new way to network. I think this is going to be good! As I say often when talking to folks about my story – I’m an open book and all I ask in return is that when we…

I don’t want to hear it (and you shouldn’t either).

I hear it a lot. I hear it at City meetings. When talking about opening new businesses. On bicycles and skis. At the dinner table with my kids. I hear it everywhere and I decided something. I hear it because we aren’t willing to put in the effort to make it possible. It got me thinking to a time when I was sitting in a meeting with many of the City’s leadership staff. I remember telling one of them to stop telling me that what I thought was best was impossible but, rather, use that energy to tell me all…

It’s not as much about a degree as it is the opportunity of the future.

But here is the crazy one. I have had this itch for the past couple of weeks to go back to school. Then, out of the blue, I heard about a degree that Western Colorado (or, Western State for those that have grown up in and out of the Gunnison / Crested Butte valley) is offering online. I can’t stop thinking about it! Western has been a school I have thought about often and I pretty much thought I’d end up there for my undergrad work before I landed at Belmont. Maybe now is my chance. Crazy. Jason Duncan | A Thought Over Coffee | A Crazy…

What’s left when you have already had your DREAM job?

I can remember finishing up high school and headed to college. I remember thinking that everything I had been doing and would be doing for the next few years would put me on the path towards that dream job.. that dream career. I often thought about the first day walking into that roll that I had been working so hard to get to. The people I had met and would be meeting. It feeling all real and exciting and scary. I was lucky enough to walk right in to my dream job right out of college. Mine happen to be…

So what if it takes 30 years

The Queens Gambit. We have all heard of it by now. The series that took Netflix by storm and set all sorts of records. I had never heard of it before the evening I was aimlessly scrolling though the menu looking for something to watch. I was hooked (as it turns out most people where). Then, it came out that this film had been in the works for quite some time… 30 years in fact. That is impressive. Not that it took that long to make but that the creator believed in the work enough to stick to it. That…

Sunday coffee and two a days

Not the sort of two a days that you did in high school football (just to be clear – I for sure never played football despite my husky nature). No no. I’m talking about something that is seemingly just as difficult to do each day but for entirely different reasons. This morning, like most mornings, I was sipping coffee out of my favorite EVOKE coffee mug and thinking how important pen to paper and this blog have been for me over the past few months. Sometimes I feel like these posts are pretty aimless but it allows me to get…

Can this industry really change?

I figured it is a good time to talk about what I do right now.. You know, my current “career” now that I am out of coffee. Back in 2018, my wife and I started a real estate team (then with Keller Williams Central OK). In July of 2019, we moved our group to the “new to Oklahoma” Engel & Volkers – a global luxury brand of real estate advisors and professionals that we felt like cared about details, people, and brand like we did. The Duncan Group has enjoyed the national support of Engel & Volkers and the people…

It wasn’t surprising. I had seen it before.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” —Eleanor Roosevelt. I am a dreamer. stubborn one at that. A visionary of sorts I guess. When I get something in my mind, it consumes me and I want to see it happen. I know it can be done. No matter how many steps I have to take to get there. I often wonder what other people are thinking about and feeling in their heads before their “huge thing” happens. What is the night before like? What is that thing they are visioning before they sleep? Are…
