A Thought Over Coffee Posts

Something for that long, cold winter night….(or day)

The scoop is… I love bicycles. (And trail running. And vans. And the outdoors and the things we can do together to make this planet safer, healthier, and better for ALL people.) I bounce someplace between gravel roads and single track and deep down wish for a year of travel with the bikes to all sorts of cool places. Hell, I’d love to follow the footsteps of BKXC and do a 50 state tour! Maybe someday. BUT – what to do to keep motivated and inspired when not hitting the trails. That’s the question. Well, I try to read as…

And a big thank you…

No really. THANK YOU. A few months ago, I challenged myself to begin writing here again. To push myself even when I wasn’t comfortable with what I was talking about. To try and gain some momentum and use this outlet. THANK YOU. Thank you to those that have been reading and commenting. That makes this so much better of a place. THANK YOU. Thank you for coming along on this journey as I think out loud on things like coffee, bicycles, business, entrepreneurship, Edmond, city planning and development, leadership, and life. I know that is a wide range of topics…

Sunday coffee and two a days

Not the sort of two a days that you did in high school football (just to be clear – I for sure never played football despite my husky nature). No no. I’m talking about something that is seemingly just as difficult to do each day but for entirely different reasons. This morning, like most mornings, I was sipping coffee out of my favorite EVOKE coffee mug and thinking how important pen to paper and this blog have been for me over the past few months. Sometimes I feel like these posts are pretty aimless but it allows me to get…

Just talking real life for a minute. Cool?

These are my boys. TUK is 10, Grey is 7. Park is 3. They are fierce little guys with different personalities that fit into the chapters of our lives as strong characters that our book deserves. Here is one thing though. They did not ask for this year to happen the way it did. They didn’t want to be out of school half the time. They didn’t want to miss our summer vacation or take a break from their friends. They did not really want to spend their days at home doing school work and sticking around the house. Here…

The tunes that made it all happen.

I think it was 2005. My wife Jenni and I had been working hard on the business plan for EVOKE. What was clear was that we needed to learn… alot.. about coffee. So, we loaded up and headed to Portland for a week at the American Barista and Coffee School (This would actually be a great stand alone post so I will talk WAY MORE on this in the coming days!). This was my first time in Portland. My first time to really engage with the national coffee scene. So many firsts! But, this post isn’t about business planning or…

Do you believe in the end of the story?

Both of you that read this blog probably know one thing by now: I get a lot of motivation from Jesse Itzler. In fact, when I log into Instagram on the daily, I look for his stories before I do anything else. I was doing just that a few minutes ago when I came across this quote from him: “You have to believe in the end of the story” Man. That got me thinking about all the stories I’ve been telling over the years. Stories that I have told about my businesses, my community, my goals. Stories that have been…

Can this industry really change?

I figured it is a good time to talk about what I do right now.. You know, my current “career” now that I am out of coffee. Back in 2018, my wife and I started a real estate team (then with Keller Williams Central OK). In July of 2019, we moved our group to the “new to Oklahoma” Engel & Volkers – a global luxury brand of real estate advisors and professionals that we felt like cared about details, people, and brand like we did. The Duncan Group has enjoyed the national support of Engel & Volkers and the people…

Set it in stone. Measure the results.

Goals. We talk about them, read about them, hear about them, avoid them, and loosely set them all the time. Sometimes, when we are lucky, we even reach those goals! But what if it didn’t have to be about luck all the time? I mean, let’s face it…. we are setting a goal to focus on something, right? Something that we have not be able to achieve on our own or without a set plan. Something we probably care about (or need to care about). Something that we need to focus some energy and attention to. In fact, Dictionary, com defines…

It wasn’t surprising. I had seen it before.

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” —Eleanor Roosevelt. I am a dreamer. stubborn one at that. A visionary of sorts I guess. When I get something in my mind, it consumes me and I want to see it happen. I know it can be done. No matter how many steps I have to take to get there. I often wonder what other people are thinking about and feeling in their heads before their “huge thing” happens. What is the night before like? What is that thing they are visioning before they sleep? Are…
